Feeling strung out? Easy ways to pamper yourself without breaking the bank

The first few months of the year can leave you feeling a bit down and dull. After the excitement of Christmas and the new year, January and February can be dreary, as well as seemingly lasting forever.

Now that March is here and spring has officially sprung, it's time to get rid of those cobwebs, brighten up and give yourself a good pamper.

While we'd all like to head off to the nearest salon or spa, this can get a bit pricey. But here at TJC, we've got some great ideas for an at-home pamper session that won't break the bank but will still leave you feeling fab.

Face mask

How nice is it to sit back with a face mask on and relax for a few minutes? Not to mention how amazing your skin feels when you wash it off. While you can get some face masks for cheap, the best ones tend to come with a high price tag – and for good reason.

However, you can make your own simple exfoliating face mask for very little. A coffee-based mask will help to get rid of dead skin cells, brighten and rejuvenate your skin, leaving it clear and feeling amazing.

All you need is around three tablespoons of used espresso grounds – you can use more or less depending on how scrubby you want the mask – two tablespoons of warmed coconut oil and two teaspoons of liquid honey.

Simply mix everything together and put on clean, dry skin for between five and ten minutes before washing off in gentle circular motions with warm water. While the coffee exfoliates, the coconut oil will smooth and moisturise and the honey works as a natural antibacterial.

If you have sensitive skin, you may want to use more coconut oil and test the mask on a small area of skin before putting it over your whole face.

Deep condition

You don't have to go to the hairdresser for an amazing hair treatment, as you can get similar results at home. A simple high street hair masque or deep conditioner can leave your hair feeling salon soft if you take a couple of extra steps.

If your hair needs a pamper, try applying your conditioner or masque to hair that has been quickly towel dried. This will get rid of excess water and stop it dripping all over the place.

You should then wrap your hair in a towel that has been heated with hot water or on a radiator. If you don't want to use a towel, you can pop on a plastic shower cap to get a similar effect.

This, along with the heat from your scalp, will warm the hair up, which allows your hair follicles to open up and absorb more of the conditioner. Leave the masque on for five to ten minutes – or longer if the directions require – before rinsing out thoroughly.

You'll find your hair feels much more nourished than if you had simply put on your conditioner as normal.

Manicure

The cold weather can leave your skin feeling tired and dry, especially when it comes to your hands. This is why a hand pamper and manicure can be a great idea.

You might think you need expensive cuticle oil and hand cream to really have a pamper, but you only need a standard hand cream and a pair of plastic disposable gloves, or cotton moisturising gloves.

Start by removing any nail polish and washing your hands. Once dry, apply a generous helping of hand cream. Then simply pop on your plastic gloves and relax for a while. As with the hot towel, the heat generated by your hands and contained by the gloves will open up your pores and allow the moisturiser to sink in deeper.

You can leave the gloves on for ten minutes or up to an hour, depending on how dry your hands are. When you remove the gloves, rub in any excess cream. If your hands feel a little bit sticky, gently pat them dry with a clean towel.

Then you can use cuticle sticks to gently push back your softened cuticles before painting your nails in your chosen shade.
