How to keep your wedding ring looking as good as new

It’s said to be the best day of your life, so it’s no surprise that the memories you hold from your wedding day will always be remembered. While there will be songs, places and fragrances that take you back to your big day, there’s one permanent object that will stay with – or rather on – you forever: your wedding ring.

This beautiful gold or silver band is a permanent reminder of your special day and of course, your eternal commitment to your loved one. Naturally, you will want to ensure that your ring is kept in tip-top condition at all times, but through everyday wear, this can be tricky.

With a little care and attention though, your wedding ring can look as good as new for years to come. Here are a few tips to follow:

Day-to-day use

Performing daily tasks – such as taking a shower, going to the gym and sleeping – can result in a build-up of dirt and debris on your ring, particularly around any diamond settings. This can be tough to clean and will leave your wedding ring looking dull and worn.

To keep your ring in good condition and sparkling for longer, remove it before you shower, exercise and go to sleep.

Avoid chemicals

Makeup, face and body creams, hand and shower gels, and household cleaning products all contain chemicals that can really cause damage to your ring. Before using any of these items, make sure you take your ring off and wash and dry your hands thoroughly before putting it back on.

If your ring does come into contact with any lotions or solutions, however, soak it in warm water and mild dishwashing liquid, then gently scrub it clean with an unused, soft toothbrush. Dry your ring with a soft cloth and it will be gleaming in next to no time.

Store it safely

Whenever you remove your ring, it should be stored safely. This is especially important if you take it off before washing your hands in a public bathroom, for example, since it is easy to forget and leave your ring lying on the side of the wash basin.

When you are out and about, therefore, carry a cushioned ring box in your handbag and place your ring inside it any time you choose to take it off.

If you’re storing your wedding ring at home, however, place it into a soft container or pouch away from other jewellery to prevent it from getting scratched.

Expert check-up

Over time, diamonds and other stones or jewels can become loose in their settings. It is important, therefore, to take your wedding ring to an expert jeweller for a maintenance check-up around twice a year.

They will be happy to secure any loose fittings, clean your ring, and advise you on the best ways to care for it.
