Sun, Sea and SPF

The weather has stayed faithful for the last couple of days and here at TJC Towers we are rejoicing, the weather man has promised at least a weeks worth of sunshine in July… Yipee!

With the days becoming longer and lighter, we’re sure you’ll be spending more time outside, doing all kinds of fun things, especially if you’re a parent with the ‘Summer Holidays’ looming  – have you got anything planned?

If you’re going to be out in the sun, especially on a hot day, you need to stay safe, and that means you need to update your SPF protecttion, that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, but do you know the difference?

In the simplest terms, UVB rays are likely burn the top layer of skin, causing sunburn and cell damage that can lead to cancerous changes.

Sun protection factor – SPF – measures the strength of a cream’s sun filter against UVB rays. Sunscreens with a high SPF factor should not lead to you staying in the sun for longer, since you’ll be exposed to more UVA rays.

Contrary to UVB rays, UVA rays don’t burn, but penetrate deep into the skin. They are responsible for cell damage that contributes to ageing skin and skin cancer.

What is this SPF and what does it mean?

SPF stands for sun protection factor. In theory, if your skin burns after 10 minutes in the sun but you decide to use an SPF of 30, the sunscreen would extend your skin’s natural protection 30 times more than bare skin alone, eg 10 mins x factor 30 = 300mins/ 5 hours of protection

You also can think of SPF as the percentage of UV rays it protects against: SPF 50 blocks 98 percent; SPF 30, 96 percent; and SPF 15, 94percent.
